Area Information

Approximately 42km from Alicante is Torrevieja which is primarily a tourist resort, but the other important resource of this coastal town, coexisting with tourism is the salt extracts from the La Mata and Torrevieja salt flats now listed as a natural park. The Torrevieja salt flats have a perimeter of 25km, and are connected to La Mata lagoon and the Acequion Canal which runs to the sea. Salt has been mined here since the middle ages.

Today, residential estates have been built in the surrounding hills, but the parkland has been preserved. Among the visitors to the park are people who come for the mud baths, reputed to be of therapeutic value. Salt from Torrevieja is exported around the world, with the annual production surpassing 1 million tonnes.

Torrevieja's attractions include the Casino Numancia which is also a venue for a notable program of art shows and exhibitions; the Eras De La Sal (Salt beds) built in 1777 which now hosts various shows and cultural events. If you are looking for greenery Torrevieja has three parks. The Park of Nations which is 40,000 square meters in size and among other things hosts a gigantic dinosaur shaped slide which is just one of the attractions for children. Also Molino de Agua Park which is 50,000 square feet of scenic walk throughout. Finally Dona Sinforosa Park which is a perfect place to rest and refresh with its oasis overlooking Acequion beach.
